Thyroid disorders have emerged as prevalent health concerns impacting a significant portion of India’s population, with nearly 42 million individuals affected, according to recent observations by noted endocrinologist Dr. Rakesh Bobba from the Ramesh Hospitals group. Dr. Bobba highlighted the critical implications of undiagnosed thyroid diseases, linking them to potential risks such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and infertility.
Speaking in anticipation of World Thyroid Day, observed annually on May 25, Dr. Bobba emphasized the day’s significance in raising awareness about thyroid health. He stressed the crucial role of the thyroid gland, likening its shape to that of a butterfly and explaining its production of hormones that exert influence on every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. “Thyroid health is of utmost importance,” he asserted, “as thyroid hormones play pivotal roles in growth, neuronal development, reproduction, and the regulation of energy metabolism.”
Dr. Bobba underscored a concerning statistic: approximately 50 percent of individuals affected by thyroid disease remain unaware of their condition. He also highlighted the gender discrepancy, noting that women are five to eight times more likely than men to experience thyroid-related problems.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified iodine deficiency as a primary cause of preventable brain damage worldwide, a point Dr. Bobba emphasized. “Iodine is an essential element for normal thyroid function,” he explained, noting that since the body does not produce it, iodine intake must come from the diet. Consequences of iodine deficiency include physical and mental retardation, cretinism, endemic goiter, hypothyroidism, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
To address this, Dr. Bobba advocated for a recommended daily iodine intake of 250 micrograms during pregnancy to ensure adequate thyroid hormone production. He advised pregnant and lactating women to incorporate a daily multivitamin or mineral supplement containing 250 mcg of iodine or ionized salt. Such measures are critical, he stressed, for normal brain development in fetuses and infants.
The endocrinologist also highlighted the repercussions of thyroid irregularities, citing that the gland’s overproduction or underproduction of hormones leads to various health problems in the long term. Among the common disorders associated with thyroid health, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is prevalent…
Dr. Bobba’s insights shed light on the pressing need for awareness, preventive measures, and adequate support for thyroid health, especially among vulnerable groups such as women and expectant mothers. As World Thyroid Day approaches, his message resonates, urging individuals to prioritize understanding and addressing thyroid-related concerns for improved overall health and well-being.
